(Black Hen Music)
"An engaging mix of folk-rock songwriting that balances a bit of hard-hitting
punk attitude with squeezebox romance, and a hint of klezmer."
- Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal
"Berner is the real thing. Powerful Poetry. I want all his records."
- Bob Wiseman
"I love Berner's shit, I sing it all the time. I heard him play the new
album tunes live nite after nite on tour and they started out sounding
great and I dug them more every show. 'Iron Grey' is a fantastic song
that I wish I'd written; I guess I'll have to cover it. He'd be a good
card player, too, if he'd only apply himself. Listen to this man."
- Corb Lund
Geoff Berner writes peculiar, witty, sometimes heartbreaking songs with way
too much insight into human nature. When he sings them, he stands alone on
stage, playing his accordion, Estella. The music is a unique mix of folk,
punk and klezmer. The effect can be at times haunting, confrontational or
just absurd. Sometimes all three at the same time.
"I play accordion." The Vancovuer native says, point blank. "I make no
apologies for it. It's part of my heritage as a Jew of Eastern European
descent. I choose to present my songs this way."
In spite (or perhaps because) of his unorthodox approach, he's doing well,
earning a living as a traveling, recording musician. Following the release in
2000 of his debut EP "Light Enough to Travel" on punk rock label Sudden Death
Records, he's toured Europe three times (Billy Bragg's manger, Peter Jenner,
books his U.K. dates), played at over a dozen Canadian folk festivals
(Stanfest, Calgary, Vancouver and Rootsfest among them) and performed
throughout the U.S.
He's shared bills with such folk luminaries as the Corb Lund Band, Alberta
Slim, Spirit of the West, Valdy, Tanya Tagaq Gillis, Carmaig De Forest,
Attila the Stockbroker, and the Be Good Tanyas, who cover Berner's song
"Light Enough to Travel" on their Nettwerk Records release, "Blue Horse."
Recently singed to Black Hen Music, Berner's first full-length CD "We Shall
Not Flag Or Fail, We Shall Go On To The End" is set to be released on
February 7, 2003. Look for him to tour Canada in February and March before he
heads to Europe in May.
